Social Capital in India.

Mushy hours.

Watched this cute movie P.S. I love you. How incredibly difficult it can be at times to move on in life.
But that's only as long as you think about moving on. Once you stop trying, it gets so easier. You don't have to forget the past, to move ahead in life. You never can ! It's about cherishing the times that make you happy and learning from those that bring you pain. And it's just that. Nothing more, nothing less.

Oblivious of the obvious.

So, Jack is back to the Podium ! Ohh, I'm loving it. It had been so long. I almost feel I had lost myself, don't know where.
I had given up everything I loved, I enjoyed. But better late than never.

However, an alumni rightly said, " At IIMB, you can do only 2 out of the 3 - Sleep, Study, or Have Fun."
In an effort to manage all three simultaneously, I have been messing up all three of them badly.

So, is it time to recall the adage -

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy,
All play and no work makes Jack a mere toy
.

High time, I say :)

Sugar & Salt.

Life so far has been a bit of sugar, and a pinch of salt.

Before joining IIMB, I had resolved to myself, I'd do all that I missed out on in IITG, here in IIMB. I'm glad I've lived upto my words so far. I contested my first formal election today. Didn't win though :( However, thinking of Abraham Lincoln makes me feel better. The big question is - did I learn anything? Yes, indeed. No qualms thus.

Growing up.

It is no secret that I am a confused person. Some family reasons apart, I never knew why I was going for an education in management. Two weeks into the course, I realize why I had to do this course. Management is not as much about learning the courses by rote as it is about evolving as a person. On one hand you revel and dance all night, on the other hand you empathise with orphans. You realize you are standing between two worlds- the bright and the shining world, and the dark and the gloomy world. While nothing stops you from taking on the path that leads to the shine & shimmer, you also know it is you, who can bridge this never-ending rift between the two worlds.

It is about over-coming the subtle weaknesses in your character. Some of the vital learnings so far have been:

1. Integrity is of paramount importance. Never compromise on it.

2. Acknowledge, Accept and Appreciate differences.

3. Don't be the Indian Crab. Trust your team. Share strengths as well as weaknesses.

The next 2 years is going to be a journey of a lifetime, I believe. 

Ohh, by the way, the sleepless nights were not in anticipation of the future. They were rather in preparation for the future :D

Sleepless Nights.

It is 3.53 AM (IST) and  I am still awake, meaning I didn't sleep at all. This is rare! Very rare ! I love to sleep, and I want to sleep, but can't fall asleep. The last time I had such sleepless nights was when I was taking JEE. I had loads to do then. Today, on the contrary, I have nothing to do. It is ideally the ideal time to sleep as much as I want to. But it's just not happening.

Is it the anticipation of the future, or the nostalgia of the past, that is troubling the present?? They say for a happy and peaceful present, we must learn to disconnect the present from the past and the future. But that never happens with me. The three tenses go hand-in-hand in my life, always.

I should try and sleep. Have to go to the office in the morning. Have a meeting from 11. Darn! no one works as much as I am working, in the final 3 days at work. Do hell with Hitler :(

Not Fair.

He is 24. So am I.
He is decently handsome. I am decently pretty (or at least I think I was, before I had this horrible hair-cut).
I like him. He'd have liked me too (I know I'm likeable), if only we met.
The Spanish value him at US$132m ??? :O
And I'll be jobless in a week !!! :((

Things don't look bright for sure. Grim, to be precise.
How can the world be so unfair to some people ? Arrrghhhhh.

Disaster !

I need lots and lots of chocolates to make me feel up today :((((((((
I know she had hatched this plan as soon as she saw me, that jealous butcher ! It was all a conspiracy, and I fell into the trap as an innocent lamb. I had told Mom I can't do this without her, I had never done this before. Mom insisted I've grown up now and that I can handle such trivial things. But I always suspected things would mess up. I'm absolutely naive at these. Yet, I took the dreadful decision and you see my apprehensions were so right !

Ohh no, my tresses are gone :(( That butcher said she would cut just half-an inch but chopped off six inches. I feel bald. And the hair-cut is awful ! It's nothing like what I had told her. How could she do this to me? I don't want to go out for weeks, not unless I have my hairs back.

I feel like crying. Mummy :((((((((

Desi Tadka.

The readers of this blog must have figured out by now that I'm not one of those suave people around. I like things the desi way. So, I find the pure chinese food at Mainland China awful; but love the Indianized noodle Mom makes at home. I felt the Pizza I had in Rome was absolutely tasteless,  and my favourite flavour of Pizza is veg/paneer tikka. I get a headache if I listen to modern Western music for too long (the likes of Mozart & Beethoven, meaning the western classics are a different genre all together), but can listen to old hindi melodies for almost forever !

Going by my tastes it is obvious that I'm not a big buff of Hollywood/ English movies. However, I recently got hold of a friend's hard-disk loaded with english movies and given that no Bollywood movie is releasing of late, and I don't have much to do right now, I'm currently on a movie marathon. Surprisingly, 3 of the 5 movies I've seen since last evening, have been re-made (read copied) by Bollywood.

With all due respect to the originals, I feel our desi versions were much more fun. Not that I approve of copying, but sometimes adding a bit of spice makes things all the better. Just imagine Chane ki Dal without any tadka ?? Eeeww !!

Besides, when we talk of originality of ideas, well is any idea actually original? Every invention is either derived from an older idea, or is meant to bring out the shortcomings of an older idea . Einstein's Theory of General Relativity was derived from Newton's Law of Gravitation. The wonder of the world, Taj Mahal, drew inspirations from older Mughal buildings including- the Gur-e Amir (the tomb of Timur, progenitor of the Mughal dynasty, in Samarkand), Humayun's Tomb, Itmad-Ud-Daulah's Tomb (sometimes called the Baby Taj), and Shah Jahan's own Jama Masjid in Delhi !!

History stands witness, past has always been an inspiration. But then I must acknowledge that blatant copy-paste impedes the growth of ideas. For example, Pyar to Hona hi Tha copies French Kiss, scene to scene. This clearly reflects a dearth of creativity. As long as the new builds upon the old, ideas and thus civilisations grow. But the lack of creativity is a clear indicator of a decadent civilisation.

There is a famous saying in history, "Civilisations that cease to grow, begin to shrink." I believe the same holds true of ideas. Stagnation of ideas is dangerous, be it in movies or in other aspects of life. Ideas should keep building one upon the other and thus evolve for the better.

The point to take home is that if we as a nation wish to grow, we need to evolve in terms of ideas and creativities. Simply adding Desi tadka to Firangi idea will not take us too far. I guess that is one of the reasons why Bollywood hasn't hogged the attention of movie congnoscenti around the globe so far.

If the leaders of Dera Sachkhand Ballan were attacked and killed in Vienna, Austria, what good will be done by burning train coaches, vehicles & revenue offices in Punjab, India? How can mob get so insane at times?

I had wanted to see a drama (read live theatre performance) on Lady Macbeth for quite sometime. I missed the play called Meeting Macbeth, but when I was offered an opportunity to watch Dial-m for Macbeth, I just couldn't resist it. Centuries back, Shakespeare wrote the play Macbeth , where the protagonist was Lord Macbeth. His wife was refered to as Lady Macbeth. Ever since then, there have been numerous adaptations of Macbeth in various plays across the globe. However, most of the adaptations seem to derive their protagonist from Lady Macbeth rather than Macbeth himself.

What makes Lady Macbeth more perennial than Macbeth?

Now, unlike Cleopatra, Lady Macbeth was known neither for her beauty nor for her arts of seduction. Yet, there is something very charming about her. Lady Macbeth is the quintessential human. She epitomises the extremes of human desire. She is the steroetype mad-in-love woman who goes to the extent of hatching a regicide to help her beloved get the throne. But, she also defies her own feminity to lend Macbeth the unflinching emotional support. For all the brutalities committed by her & Macbeth, Macbeth finds solace in the strength of his Lady and soon relapses to brutalities in the wake of his own power hunger. But, Lady Macbeth is humane like all of us. She had her weak moments when she committed the felony. But she feels the pangs of guilt, for no human is devoid of a conscience and a sense of remorse for his/her own ill-deeds. The realistic grey character of Lady Macbeth makes her so appealing, for there are no blacks and whites in life. What are we all, but different shades of grey.

Hence, Lady Macbeth continues to live in each one of us and in the domain of art and literature.

Finally, to conclude this post, let me post the famous soliloquy from Macbeth, as it is something we all can relate to.

Pride vs Survival.

Charles Darwin, in his Theory of Evolution, said that the struggle for existence is what drives living beings to evolution. That means Survival is the biggest incentive for any form of life. But as always, exceptions do exist.

Try to think of one thing that can act as a bigger incentive than survival?? Pride !!!

Ohh, yes Pride can at times be a bigger motivator than Survival.

Case in hand: Today, it was a KKR vs RR match in the IPL. While RR was battling for its survival in IPL 2009, KKR was fighting for its Pride. And the match turned out to be an upset to Darwinism ! Pride won against Survival.

That makes me wonder if Pride can be an equally big force for other forms of life as well? Or is it humans per se?
Moreover, how do I interpret this Pride - Ego or Self-respect ?
